In working through this week’s lectionary readings a few things came to minds. Looking at Ruth I saw a very brave lady who find herself in a foreign country among people of a different nationality and culture but making a decision to follow the God of the Israelites. Maybe she made this decision as a foreigner because just as the Psalmist she discovered God to be a trustworthy God who cares about the poor, the oppressed, and the foreigner. In allowing herself to acknowledge this about God we see how she overcome fear and a devastating and negative situation. This was so powerful that she was willing to leave the familiar behind and set out into the unknown. A bold act founded in what she believed about God.
